Arc’teryx

Ok, so the big question is, are these jackets worth the money? The short answer is NO! I will tell you why below. The other question is, are these jackets and pants good quality? The answer is yes, but…. Read more below:

I got my first Alpha Leaf Jacket in 2011 and I must say, it was waterproof, comfortable, and stylish, but was it worth the $1000 price tag? I don’t think so and here is why. Every year or so, the jacket starts losing waterproof beading qualities, and begins to delaminate. The manufacturer claims that it is due to not washing it enough, but I assure you I wash it regularly, using the required products and directions to clean and restore the waterproofing. You can search proper washing and drying for these gore-tex products online and fine manufacturers directions. I also notice from washing, it seems you actually wear out the jackets a bit and reduce the water beading ability. So it is not a perfect solution. Over the years I have had to replace my jacket approximately 5 times due to warranty failures. SO yes, the manufacturer does do a decent job of providing warranty, but again the problem is, time line on waiting on a replacement, and you always are required to pay the difference of the past purchase price compared to the new retail price of the jacket, which always goes up. For example now it is approximately $1500 for me to get my latest replacement jacket minus the $1300 approximate value they assign to my previous generation Alpha Leaf jacket. I am also now waiting over 6 months for a warranty replacement at the time of writing. SO ya, you will get a new jacket, but they will grind your gears a bit, make you pay a bit, and drag their feet on the replacement… so in short, is it worth it to drop $1500 for high performance gear with a warranty? No, you are better off buying a $100-300 jacket every couple years as needed and avoid the drama.
